Ladakh in India is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges, the Himalayas and Karakoram, Ladakh lies at an altitude ranging from about 2,750 meters at Kargil to 7,672 meters at Saser Kangri in the Karakoram.

Thus the summer temperatures rarely exceed about 27 Degree C in the shade, while in winter they may plummet to minus 20 Degree C even in Leh. It is said that only in Ladakh can a man sitting in the sun with his feet in the shade suffer from sunstroke and frostbite at the same time.

The people of Ladakh are predominantly Buddhist and practice Tibetan Buddhism tempered with the old animistic faith and Tantricism. Besides Buddhism, a large area of Ladakh like Drass and the lower Suru valley are inhabited almost exclusively by Muslim population.
