Kerala Bicycle Trip: Coast to Coast

The long coastline of Kerala is inextricably entwined with the culture, life and traditions of the state. Memories of early seafarers and traders have faded, but boats of various types and styles have survived. Some of Kerala's popular beaches were rediscovered by back-packers in the sixties. That started the transformation of Kerala’s small fishing villages into busy tourist destinations.

Kerala’s coastal belt is relatively flat, teeming with paddy fields, groves of coconut trees, and heavily crisscrossed by a network of interconnected canals and rivers.

We will start the trip at Cochin, the cultural capital of Kerala. We will continue southwards to Kumarakom, Marari, Kollam, Varkala, ending in Kovalam.

THE ITINERARY

PICK UP FROM COCHIN - KUMARAKOM - MARARI - KOLLAM - VARKALA - KOVALAM - DROP TO TRIVANDRUM

The cycling guide will meet you at your hotel in Cochin. Start the ride southwards to Kumarakom, a serene Backwaters destination. The region is a charming peninsula jutting into the Vembanad Lake and is dotted with traditional rice boats and canoes. Cycling 60-70 KM.

Cycle to Marari Beach. The village of Mararikulam lies on a forgotten shore, midway up the Malabar Coast, where the Indian Ocean finally decides that it has now become the Arabian Sea. Marari is a perfect picture of Kerala's fishing villages. Cycling 35-40 KM.

Cycle to Kollam which is nestled among coconut palms and cashew tree plantations on the edge of Ashtamudi Lake. It is a small market town of old wooden houses with red-tiled roofs overhanging winding streets, perhaps the most typical of Keralan towns. Cycling: 90-95 km.

Explore Kollam on your bicycles. Visit Kollam’s principal hot spots … the port, the harbour, the light house, a cashew processing unit, a match stick making unit, a temple, the local market.... Cycling 30-40 KM .

Kochi backwaters

Cycle to Varkala. Also known as Papanasam beach, Varkala is renowned for a natural spring which is considered to have medicinal and curative properties. Watch out for the fishing lines which are dragged from the calm waters at around sunset. Cycling: 30-40 KM.

Cycle to Kovalam. Kovalam beach has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s. Looking inland from the blue waters of the Arabian Sea, the Kovalam shoreline appears as a gently curving beach. Cycling 55-60 KM

Free day at Kovalam Beach. Explore on your own or relax at your hotel.

Today you will be taken to Trivandrum airport for your flight.

In Kerala 100% of the roads are asphalt, however, the surface condition vary each year. The surface may not be 100% smooth in villages and interior country roads. Cycing will mostly be along the coast on flat roads. On the way you will come across numerous small settlements with little bazaars and white-washed houses.

January to mid-April and mid-September to December is the best time to cycle in Kerala. The average day temperature range between 20-30 degree Celsius. The days are generally sunny and pleasant but can sometimes be hot. Please bring a sun hat, sun cream and sunglasses. A light windproof/fleece may be necessary in the evenings when visiting hill stations or wildlife reserves.
